VS FFA members receive Greenhand, Chapter Degrees at annual BBQ
On Thursday November 14, 2013 the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter held its annual Pork BBQ night. This night is a night for members, family, and friends to come and see what our chapter has been doing this school year, as well as see the members receive their Greenhand and Chapter degrees.

Bob Gaston retired from the Waverly Police Department as assistant chief in 2003. He had long been involved in the Salvation Army and as an assistant pastor. We would like to thank everyone that came out to our Santa Paws event on Sunday to get their pictures taken with Santa! We always enjoying seeing our supporters and meeting new, friendly faces.
We had a great turnout on Sunday and hope to do the same at our next session! So please, mark your calendars for Saturday, December 7 and stop in to get your picture with Santa Paws! Santa will be on-site from noon-4 and ready to hear what's on your list!
Both 2 and 4 legged kids are welcome. Thanksgiving Coloring Contest winners ride with Santa
The Vinton Parks & Recreation Department recently held their annual Turkey Coloring Contest for children in 3rd grade and younger. The top three winners in each division were awarded prizes, presented with their laminated contest entry and also got to ride the fire truck with Santa in the downtown parade for the Tree Lighting Ceremony. We had over 160 total entries this year and we would like to thank all of our judges and everyone who participated! The following is a list of the contest winners. An emergency supply kit simply is a bag with an array of items assembled to help one survive at least 72 hours when evacuating due to a disaster. 72 hours is the minimum time recommended because it may take an emergency relief organization that long to respond to a disaster.

State Treasurer Michael L. Fitzgerald is offering free #2 pencils for Iowa teachers to distribute during the annual Iowa Assessment Test through the Prepare for the Basics program. Last year, the program distributed over 19,000 pencils to schools statewide.
Pine 1 FEMA Corps Helps Local Humane Society in Branson, MO

On Saturday November 2, 2013, four members of AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps Team Pine 1 began their first day on a three day project for The Shepherd of the Hills Humane Society in Branson, Missouri. Two groups of two Corps members each served at both the Adoption Center of the Humane Society and the soon to open Humane Society Used Furniture Store where the proceeds go to the animals of the Humane Society.
